So, just who is Jimmie Tiller?
Jimmie Tiller was born and grew up on a farm in Petronila, Nueces County, Texas during a time when young boys and wild burros were free to roam the countryside.
He graduated from Robstown High School in the midst of World War II. He enrolled at Texas A&M to study agriculture until his eighteenth birthday when he entered the U.S. Army. He served with the 27th division in the Pacific on Okinawa and in Japan with the Army of Occupation. After being discharged from the army, he returned to A&M to complete his B.S. degree in Animal Science. He later received a M.S. degree from Texas A&M University in Kingsville.
How a Graduate Became Professional Cowboy
Jimmie has always been a farmer and rancher with his roots set firmly in the South Texas soil. However, while in school at A&M, WJ took flying lessons and discovered a second love – flying.
Upon graduation, Jimmie returned to South Texas and began teaching a Veteran Agriculture class and was the youngest man in the group. He discovered a penchant for teaching, so when his family grew to four sons and several droughts occurred, he began teaching high school biology. This was a great pleasure and worked well with farming and ranching.
Jimmie spent nineteen years in public schools as a teacher and an administrator when things began to change. That boy who had roamed freely now felt hemmed in by rules, regulations and red tape of the system. So, he decided to combine his two loves--land and flying. WJ Tiller resigned his position as a junior high school principal, bought a helicopter, learned to fly it and went to work – in that order.
And so began this great adventure…
